You see, I am a fag hag. Fag hags are the backbone of the gay community. Without us, you're nothing! We have been there all through history guiding your sorry ass through the underground railroad! ...We went to the prom with you.”

Personally, I don't like the word "faggot". It just seems so derogatory. But when I say fag hag, you all know what I'm talking about.

So, I have this friend who is a gay male. I also have this female friend who spent a lot of time with said male. It all started out in a strange manner.....(cue dreamy music)

We all started school together. The male (who I will call Will) and female (who I will call Grace) were placed in the same working group. I was in another. We took a field trip at the beginning of the year, where I met both individuals during a hike. We hit it off, and we all became friends.

Well, Grace came to me one day and told me she was crushing on Will. I was like, "ummm....I think he's gay." Granted, I have horrible gay-dar, so I wasn't totally sure. But just talk to Will and you kind of get the idea that he may be partial to the same sex. Grace is in denial and tries to provide reasons she thinks that Will is straight. She obsessed all weekend about Will and was bothering me while I was studying. No one bothers em when she's studying! So, I texted Will and asked him if he's dating a guy or has dated a guy....kind of an ambush...but I was fed up. He texts back in a joking manner, not really admitting it. But I knew the truth.

Grace was still not convinced at this point. She was consumed all weekend with this "dilemma"...which I believed was a non-issue. Finally, she gave in and asked Will. He told her that he, in fact, was gay and that he was dating a friend we had met a few weeks earlier. This seemed to convince her...finally. I don't know if she was embarrassed or what, but she started telling me that she knew all along and should have gone with her instincts. Maybe she was hurt.

After these events, things seemed to change. Will and Grace became the best of friends. They went everywhere together, did everything together, and spoke for each other. Grace even went along with Will when he was hanging out with his new man. It was an interesting dynamic. I started calling them a married couple...which it seemed like they were...except for the fact that they lived apart...and he is gay...but you get the point.

Then, recently, I notice that Will and Grace are not hanging out as much together. Grace confides in me. She is very upset. And she tells me that Will has been excluding her from events and activities and not answering her texts/calls at times. She felt that she was being replaced or just denied. I haven't heard the point of view from Will, but things do not seem good.

Grace stopped eating for a while because she was so distraught. She moped around. Will became bitchy. Grace wouldn't tell Will what was bothering her....so she would tell it all to me! Now, I'm a believer that communication is key to any relationship. If something is bothering you, you tell the person who is the cause of the problem. Grace kept telling me that telling Will wouldn't change anything because Will is insensitive to others' feelings. Well, it may be true to some extent, but I would hope that he would be responsive to a close friend's feelings. All along, I was thinking to myself, "Is Grace in love with Will? Did there time together just strengthen Grace's feelings for Will? Can a hag fall in love with her fag?"

Grace continued with her shenanigans. But, finally, she gave in one day and wrote Will and email (although she sits right next to him in class. that's what we do...message each other and surf the net when class is boring). It took a while, but he responded. I'm not sure what Will's email said, but it seemed to be somewhere along the lines of saying that it would take time to make things normal.

::sigh::

So, that is how things stand at the moment. The group of friends has been torn apart from this drama between the fag and his hag. We walk on eggshells, determined not to disrupt the environment any further. In the words of Rodney King, "Can we all just get along?"

I'm not one to take sides on issues such as these. I'm like Switzerland...I tend to stay neutral.

But I will say this....
dramatic fag + dramatic hag = not a good outcome

Hopefully, things will clear up soon. I need to study, dammit! But I guess this is all the drama and I'll get in my humdrum life in med school.

Has the marriage come to an end? What will happen with Will? What will happen with Grace? Will the group remain friends in the end? hmmmm

TO BE CONTINUED...?

(oh...by the way...how are you?!?!)

Transitioning from 2007 to 2008

A (very) Belated Happy New Year!!!

It's hard to believe that we've already made it through a month in the year 2008! Time seems to fly by.

Prior to Christmas, I was fortunate enough to attend an amazing concert! Ingrid Michaelson opened the show...she was pretty good! Then Brandi Carlile came on stage. The Indigo Girls performed with Brandi Carlile. And KT Tunstall closed it out. It was an awesome show. Worth staying up after a long day of exams! haha

Christmas was spent with the family....and relaxing (if you can believe that!). Although I was fearing family drama, it was pretty tame this year. However, I did cause somewhat of a stir before I left home. I finally came out to my mother! She took it kinda well. But there was a period of time when she didn't call me. Luckily, I have a very supportive and loving aunt who was willing to talk some sense into my mother. So things are going well now, but we haven't discussed my relationships. It was just a great relief to finally let them know.

I spent New Year's in DC with great friends and the lady. It was a low-key celebration....you know....drinking at a friend's house and passing out there instead of driving while intoxicated. We were being responsible ;-)

It was back to school after that. And back to the same old rigorous studying. But it's fun.

I've been giving mini-performances for friends and colleagues. But nothing like performing at an open mic. I was hoping to, but it's hard to find time to prepare and perform. So, this will have to suffice.

Currently, I'm listening to Sia's new album, "Some People Have Real Problems". It's excellent! I'm hoping to get Sarah Betten's new album soon.

Hope everyone had a wonderful New Year's celebration! (although it's kinda late) Superbowl's this weekend in AZ! Should be fun! (too bad I can't get tickets....and that I don't really like football) But it gives us all a reason to drink and act crazy. So have fun!!!

I'm Still Alive

I don't know if anyone checks in on this blog anymore. It has been a while!

Life has been totally different since I started medical school. What I thought was a busy schedule before does not even compare to how things are now!

I can honestly say that medical school is the hardest thing I've ever done in my whole life! (...well maybe with the exception of birth....but this is the hardest thing I can remember) My 'fun' life has been shown the door. Every day begins either 8am or 7am (but I try to get to school about an hour early). We sit in lectures for hours. We have cases to work on. We have assignments to accomplish. We also have lab days when we learn how to interact with patients and how to do different exams. We also learn treatment techniques...that focus on the bones and muscles. We do some massage-type treatment, but we got more into depth on different techniques that relieve other disorders and symptoms. Anatomy labs are ok...we don't have to cut open any bodies...and I'm ok with that. After I'm done with classes (which can be noon, 3pm, 5pm...depending on the day), I go study until it's time to go to bed. It's kind of depressing that I have no life. But I try to find some time to strum my guitar or hang out with new friends.

Although it's hard work, it's kind of fun. I always like learning new things...and I've learned so much, already! I sit around diagnosing myself and my friends with rare diseases...that we clearly don't have. I can treat people already (with some stuff). We have exams every two weeks. I've been passing (so that's a plus!).

I've had some time to check out the area, but not too much. I've gone to a couple of lesbian clubs, but they're much different from those in DC. The people here are different, as well. The college town nearby is ok for going out every once in a while. The weather is great! It's snowing in DC, but it's in the mid-70's here! Makes great running weather (if the sun didn't set so early...but the sunsets/sunrises are gorgeous!).

There aren't many artists that come through this area...at least none that I know. However, Brandi Carlile was here a couple of months ago. So, I went to see her perform. It was great...as usual. I was back in DC for Thanksgiving, and I finally got to see Tegan and Sara in concert! That was a good show. I'm hoping to catch more concerts when I can. But I haven't been able to keep up with new music. Some recent purchases:
Missy Higgins -- On a Clear Night
Paolo Nutini -- These Streets
James Morrison -- Undiscovered
Feist -- The Reminder
Tegan and Sara -- The Con
A Fine Frenzy -- One Cell in the Sea
hhmmm...some others?

If you're reading this and have some good music suggestions, I would be forever grateful! I'll try to post every now and then (as I am now...while sitting in class...with a lecturer who is just too boring to listen to). Hope that all is well in Kelkaland!

one of the disorders we learned about is achondroplasia. it causes dwarfism. some of the kids are just too cute, like this one!

Arizona

I made it to my new home in Arizona....about 2 weeks ago. I shipped my belongings, packed my car to the rim, and drove from DC. It took about 3.5 days of driving, but I arrived in one piece.

There were a few stops along the way...including Nashville, Memphis, Oklahoma City, Amarillo, and Albuquerque. I'll have to say that New Mexico was the best part of my drive...it was just soooo beautiful! I wish I had more time to stop at more sites, but I had to get here to start my orientations. I arrived to my new apartment on Thursday, unloaded the car, unpacked a few things, bought some furniture, etc., etc. I ended up getting sick on that Saturday...I guess I was tired...and probably dehydrated. It's freakin hot here!

Orientations began that Monday. Met a fellow lesbian in the class. My parents arrived that evening. More orientations during the week. And I received my white coat...which was pretty exciting.

Classes began last Monday. It wasn't too bad since it's just starting. Plus, we spent Wednesday - Friday on a field trip! Who would have thought I'd be on a field trip in medical school! haha We went to Montezuma's Castle (which was disappointing since it was so deteriorated), a new clinic site in Flagstaff, and the Grand Canyon. We didn't have much time at the canyon, but it was so beautiful. I'm definitely going back there. And we drove through Sedona....which is beautiful as well.

Now it's time to jump into the hard stuff. We have plenty of readings to keep us busy through the weekend. Just decided to take a break and add a new posting. Plus...everyone loves pictures! So here are a few from my travels. Enjoy!!!

Left: Beale Street - Memphis, TN
Right: Got my kicks, on Route 66!

Left: Driving through New Mexico
Right: Arizona

Left: Montezuma's Castle
Right: Grand Canyon

Busy Bee

I've, still, been keeping busy over the last few weeks.

I went hiking with a few friends in the Shenandoah National Park. It was a little overcast that day, but that made it better (cooler). We saw a baby black bear at the beginning of the hike. We moved away quickly...cause where there's a baby, there's always a momma. This hike was kind of difficult. We had about a mile of rock scrambles and lots of rough terrain. But it was great to reach the summit. There was a Catholic group holding mass at the summit. My friends and I just sat to the side and enjoyed a little lunch while they were chanting /praying or whatever. Here's the view:

I've also been enjoying sports as a spectator. A big group of friends went to a Mystics game. And I went to my first baseball game and soccer game. It was fun. There was lightning during the soccer game, so we were corralled in the concourse of the stadium. DC United won that game...good times. There are a bunch of rowdy soccer fans! I wonder how it will be now that Beckham is in the States.

Other activities include volunteering (a Habitat for Humanity build in the pouring rain...nice and muddy). Gave blood on the 4th of July....not smart because I couldn't drink for a few hours. ;-) A little mini golf and batting cage action. And kayaing. Here's one pic from the kayak:

I also had the chance to catch Rodrigo y Gabriela in Baltimore. They are amazing! It's crazy to see them live....I can't believe how fast their hands move! Good stuff.

But, sadly, I'll be leaving DC in a little over a week. I can't believe how fast time is slipping away. My final open mic night is this Sunday. I'll actually be co-hosting the event with my friend since Mara Levi will be performing in NYC.

Oh, and my friends are throwing me a 'surprise' going-away party today. They chose the wrong person to coordinate the event and invite me....because I can always read her face. She can't lie to me. And I hate surprises. Oh well, I guess I'll act surprised. Or just not show up...hahahaha

Hope everyone had a wonderful 4th of July! Be safe and Have fun!

Gaytastic

DC Pride was just fabulous. It started off with a bang at a bar called Tom Tom. I saw just about everyone out there. We danced and drank the night away!

My friends put together the Dyke March that Saturday, so I was out there showing my support (wandering around Dupont). We drank alllll day and were having a great time during the parade. Then we drank some more and some more. They had a huge party at this club called Love. I’ve been there a few times, and it’s always fun. But I guess the drinks and heat from the day were getting to me, so I went home early.

The next day was the festival. It was more fun than last year since I was more relaxed and had a bunch of friends and acquaintances there. I went with one of my friends and met up with her new girlfriend. Mistake. They were all huggy and kissy, so I just had to leave. Grabbed a drink at the beer cage. Grabbed another one. Then my other friends started showing up. That made it much better. My friend, Mara Levi, performed on the big stage. It was awesome seeing her up there in front of the capitol. Overall, it was a good Pride.

I’ve just been keeping busy and trying to keep my mind off of things. Grilling out at friends’ houses, hanging out, having fun. It’s all making it harder to think about leaving this place and these great people. We watched the Spurs kick ass in the NBA Finals against the Cavaliers. I went to a Korean Film Festival screening for a movie called The Grace Lee Project. It was highly entertaining, and I recommend it to everyone.

Last weekend, I went kayaking on the Potomac. It’s a great arm and back workout! I also volunteered at the Waterfront Festival in Arlington. The Red Cross put on this festival with rides, games, food, music, etc. I worked the beer tent, checking ID’s (saw an alarming number of lesbians ;-)). To my dismay, we couldn’t drink on the job. But it was fun volunteering with some friends. Toby Lightman and Bowling for Soup performed (wasn’t very impressed with either).

Sunday was an awesome day. I skipped out on this month's open mic to go to the True Colors Tour! The Gossip started it off. I also got to see Erasure, The Dresden Dolls, Margaret Cho, Rosie O’Donnell, Debbie Harry, Rufus Wainwright and (of course) Cyndi Lauper! Debbie Harry, actually, kinda sucked. But everything else was awwweeeessssooommmee! I had so much fun. I went with another couple and one of my friends (who I’ve been crushing on as of late…but that will go nowhere since I’ll be leaving soon….and I’m a dork). But it was good times.

So, this week, I’ve just been keeping busy with work and volunteering. Things are still rocky with the breakup, but I’m hoping for things to get better soon. ‘Girls just wanna have fun!’

Have fun everyone!

Long-awaited Update

It's been too long since I've updated. A lot has happened during that time...

I've graduated (unofficially) from graduate school. The whole family came up for the ceremonies...that was a crazy weekend. It was filled with ceremonies, tours, dinners, a flag football game, and an open mic. But it was pretty cool that we got our first win of the season that weekend when my family was there to support us.

I haven't officially graduated since I have to finish up this practicum. So I've been working as a health intern for a social service organization. It's crap! haha Well, it's not that bad. I'm just not the type to sit in an office from 9 to 5. I'd much rather be out there doing stuff.

Moving plans are coming along slowly. I guess I better get on it since I have to leave next month for Arizona! Time sure does fly!

This weekend is Pride in DC. It should be fun since I've met so many lesbians over the past year. We always have a great time together. I plan to get out there and just have fun (...now that I'm single). Yes, the gf and I broke up. We just figured it won't work out since I'll be moving across the country, and I'll basically have no time. It really hurts and stinks to break up when no one really did anything 'wrong'. But it is what it is...

Hope that all is well for you loyal blog watchers. It has become, yet another, national tragedy that has brought our nation together in mourning and asking questions. My heart goes out to all the people and families affected by this gruesome event. My television has been on the news all day, and I've been involved in conversations discussing the issues. One of those conversations was with my mother. Of course, she was very worried yesterday when she heard that the shooting occurred in Virginia. I assured her that all was ok in DC and that VA Tech is about 4 hours away.

She calls me again this morning after learning that the shooter was a South Korean student. (A little background...my parents are from South Korea. They immigrated here in their early 20s and eventually became American citizens. My brother and I were born in the US.) The reason my mom called was to tell me to be careful. She worries that the fact the shooter was Korean will cause other Americans to turn against the Korean community. I was appalled at her statement in the beginning, but I've thought about it more...and it seems to be a valid fear at this time and age in American society.

After the tragic events of 9/11, the American society became a horde of racially profiling individuals. I'm not to say that everyone reacted in this manner, but a large segment of the population did. Anyone of a dark skin who looked as if they may have been from the Middle East were looked at with a watchful eye. Women with burqas were scorned, and still are to some extent today.

It is really sad that these type of stereotyping occur. But the media doesn't help to alleviate it either. Since the identity of the shooter was revealed, the media has hounded the fact that he was 'a Korean national'. That is the first description given of this man. However, I see it as him being a 'Student' first and foremost. It is important to remember that he was a member of the VA Tech community, a loner or not. It is somewhat infuriating that the race or nationality is the first thing identified. Of course, it is often hard to miss. Sure, he looks Asian from first sight...that is clear. But that's not all that he is.

I'm Asian, but I definitely don't focus on that. Sometimes I forget that I am since I have lived my life in American society. In DC, there are people from all over the world (many Koreans included) and, to a great extent, everyone is congenial. When people ask where I'm from, I tell them 'Atlanta'. I like to look at their confused faces because I know that they're expecting some response that points to a land far away in Asia. But my response is an attempt to open their eyes to the fact that I see myself as an American. I've never lived in Korea. I hardly speak any Korean. I don't identify as a Korean. I see myself as a Korean American....but I'm a woman, a student, a friend, a daughter, a lover, a musician, an athlete, a cook, etc., etc.

So I ask of you...think not of this event as an issue of race. I'm sure that you are all educated and knowledgeable and do not jump to conclusions. We all know that the actions of one person do not reflect the actions or sentiments of a community or group as a whole. I don't want my mother's fears to come to fruition in the aftermath of this tragedy.

Rather, I would like for it to serve as a wake-up call. This is definitely an issue of mental health and stability, something the Korean community (as I have witnessed) does not address. Koreans are less inclined to talk about familial or personal issues. They are less likely to talk about any grievances or problems. It is an issue of the mental health of all students. This is what we discussed in my class yesterday (even before we knew the identity of the gunman).

- What can we do to guide these individuals through a time of great change and stress?
- What kind of support system is needed?
- Do we need greater peer counseling? This may be a good solution, since people are less inclined to seek professional help.
- How can we reduce the stigma against 'Mental Health'? Mental health is not a bad thing...it is a part of our total health. It must be addressed.

There are so many questions that will arise from this situation. Hopefully, we will be able to discuss them all and come to some type of solution to address the problems. But I hope that we realize that this is an issue of American society, and it is something that we must come together to deal with.

New Music, New Video

Brandi Carlile's new album The Story came out last week, and I've been listening to it non-stop. Her voice is just amazing. But it also turns out that there will be a new music video premiering tonight. It's a special Grey's Anatomy video that will be intertwined with Brandi Carlile's music video. Check it out if you get the chance.

I'll probably miss it since tonight is another open mic. It should be a good night. Most of my flag football team will be out to support us. The team is a bunch of really cool people, and it's nice to be able to hang out with them. Now only if we could win a game...

Good Times

The open mic went well. I sang "Animals Were Gone" by Damien Rice, "Put Your Records On" by Corinne Bailey Rae, and "You Were Meant for Me" by Jewel. There was a huge crowd this time, but it was still nice.

New York was great. It was good to catch up with some friends. The gf and I went to the Bodies Exhibition. If you haven't seen it, you should! It's so awesome. You can see all the structures, systems, and cross-sections of the bodies! We also went to watch Stomp. I had wanted to see the show when I was little...it probably would have been more fun at that point in my life. But it was still cool. We tried to go the NBC Studio Tour, but didn't have enough time to wait. So we went and played at FAO Schwarz and went atop the Empire State Building. It was a very short trip, but I'm glad we left when we did, since it started snowing that night.

Last week, I went to Arizona for my interview. I got the chance to visit the Desert Botanical Garden. It was a beautiful day, and I got some good pictures. The next day was a different story. It was pouring like crazy...people said that they hadn't had that much rain all year. Just my luck, rain in the desert while I'm there. =) The interview itself was a full day event where we went around in groups for tours, presentations, and grop activities. It was set up so that the committee could watch your interactions all day. The 2 interviews were done individually. I felt that it went very well.

I flew back home the next day. I was catching my connecting flight in Atlanta, but it was delayed. So I just wandered around the terminal, did some reading, etc. Before we started boarding, I checked my phone and realized I had missed a call. I gave them a call back. And the woman on the line says, "Congratulations! You've been accepted!" You cannot believe how happy I was at that moment (and how happy I was that my flight had been delayed. If it hadn't been, I wouldn't have gotten to hear those words that day). It was a quick decision. But, I've officially been accepted into a medical school!

Yesterday was our first flag football game. It was horrible. I think the other team scored like 5 touchdowns while we scored 0! But we had fun, learned some things, and will practice more. Hey, at least it was a good workout!

Hope you all have a great week!!!

What Will Happen Next?

It's a stressful time right now....a time to think about the future.

I'll be graduating from graduate school in May, so I need to figure out what I'll be doing next. I won't actually be graduating until I finish my practicum over the summer. My plans are to go abroad to finish this portion. There are a couple of internships I have lined up so far, but I'm hoping to hear back from this last one that will actually pay for my insurance and give me a stipend....that's always a plus!

Beyond the summer? Well, I have an interview coming up in a couple of weeks with a school out in Arizona. So I may be moving out West if things go well, but I'm not betting on it.

As for the immediate future? Next week is Spring Break, so I'll have the whole week to spend with the gf! We're planning on heading up to NYC for a couple of days and catch up with some friends. Of course we'll be doing some touristy stuff. I just hope it isn't freezing when we get there!

What will happen tomorrow? (Well, technically today) There's another Open-mic night at the bar, so I'll probably be performing. I haven't had much time to prepare because of exams and projects. But I'll probably play a few songs my friends have suggested. We'll see how that goes!

Hope everyone is having a great week!

Familiar Faces

So I've been going through this insomniatic period lately, and last night was no exception. I didn't feel like reading or doing work in the wee hours of the morning, so I turned on the television. It was about 2 a.m. and there was a movie called 'Something New'. I was interested because it was about interracial relationships....and it starred Sanaa Lathan!

The movie was not very good. I thought the directing and editing were kinda bad (choppy). But I continued to watch in hopes that it would help me fall asleep. Then, all of a sudden, I see a face I think I recognize. It's none other than Rose Rollins....the actress who plays Tasha on the L Word. She has a very small part in the movie, but she's beautiful!

Also, there's a new Dove commercial on television (and myspace). It was a competition where people submitted their own commercials. The winner was Lindsay Miller, who I went to college with. She did an awesome job! I really like the Dove 'Campaign for Real Beauty' marketing strategy. Check it out!

Last Monday was my birthday...not a big deal. I'm not really into celebrating birthdays and stuff. The gf came up, but ended up being sick all week. So I took care of her and had a good time staying in. It's nice to do that every once in a while.

Well...hope that you are all doing well. If you're near a Chinatown or something of that sort, go out there and view the parade. I didn't have the chance to go last year, but I plan on going this year. It should be tons of fun. Plus, good Chinese food!

The lunar new year is a fun time, especially for children. All you have to do is bow and say 'Happy New Year' to an adult, and you'll receive an envelope full of money. Plus, you get all these tasty, sweet treats during this time. Of course, I only came to learn of these traditions when I was in high school. By that time, I had become too old to receive gifts. ::sigh:: Oh well...it's still fun to celebrate! So, enjoy!

Happy Valentine's Day!

Happy Valentine's Day, everyone!

I'm not much of stickler for celebrating Valentine's Day. You know when you were kids, and you brought your little valentines to school to hand out to people....well, I wasn't one to do that. Sure, I did it a few years in elementary school, but I quickly realized it was a commercial ploy to boost up sales of useless things to end the slump after the winter gift-giving season. Therefore, I was never one to buy gifts for this holiday where you're supposed to proclaim your love (I wasn't bitter...I just never saw the point).

Well, even though I am in a relationship now, I don't really see the point. Why spend money on flowers and chocolates for this one day in February? Why not tell your partner that you love her/him every day! Make your own special days, give unexpected gifts. Being in a long-distance relationship makes it important to celebrate the days you are together. But I feel like a jerk, since the girlfriend kind of appreciates the sappiness of this day. I guess I'll have to really make it up to her when she comes up next week.

Maybe it's ok to fall into the masses and conform on certain occassions? Hmmm...I dunno. This experience has given me a lot to ponder today. I'm also trying to figure out HOW to make it up to her. Any suggestions?

Nevertheless, Happy Valentine's Day to you all. If you enjoy such things, have fun celebrating your love with your partner. And if you are not with anyone at the moment, do not fret, for love is in the air for all. I send you all my love, and wish you all the best!

First Performance

My first performance in front of a crowd (except for the loyal kelkians!) went well. There weren't many people at the bar that night, probably because it was freezing, but it was really nice. The headlining performer was a no-show, so we decided to do a round-robin sort of thing with everyone who wanted to perform.

Mara started off (www.maralevi.com), my friend went up and did some poetry reading, some random straight guy sang some song (just for fun), another duo played bass guitar and sang, and then I went up. We went around 3 times (except the guy didn't sing again...thank buddha!).

So I sang "Other Side of the World" by KT Tunstall, "You Belong to Me" as sung by Jason Wade, and "Happy" by Brandi Carlile.

My heart was pounding out of my chest before I went on the stage. But when I got up there, it was fine. I had fun and did a decent job.

It was a great experience and definitely a departure from my old, shy self. People were telling me I should do it again some time and play at other open mics. I don't know if I'll go that far, but it's a possibility. I'll keep you updated.

Plants

Some of my friends complained that my apartment is dull and boring. They said it needed more life. So I finally gave in and got a plant (one step away from a fish!). I got my first plant around Thanksgiving, a nice narcissus. The gf and I named it Lilly (for some odd reason), and I took very care of her. But a narcissus is a bulb (a type of daffodil), so it doesn't last too long. But that sucker grew to almost 2 feet! Here's a picture of Lilly:

Winter rolled around, and we decided to get another plant. We ended up getting a daffodil since it was so pretty. This time, we named her Daphne (possibly a more suitable name). Daphne was in a shallow pot so she didn't last very long (and didn't have as many flowers as Lilly did...not that I have a first-child preference or anything. Lilly was just more vibrant). So here's an early pic of our second child, Daphne:

Now, I think it's time to make a bigger commitment. A plant that lasts more than a couple of months may be the next step. Any recommendations? I was thinking...cactus (but that may be copping out).

Session 17

Thank you, and farewell!

An all new podcast is up on the MusiCast Sessions page. I'd love to see First Man Bill at the White House again.
b)Hell NO!
c)Depends...If Ross Perot is running, I'm going with him!
d)Who gives a sh*t?!
e)Republicans Rule!!! <--shame on you if you choose this option!
f)I don't vote <--you should!

Happy week to you all!

 <<--Too Scary!!!

Now that's more presidential -->>

Just Saying Hi

I hope that everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving. Our family get-togethers are rarely eventful, but kinda nice. We have a small family...that means less cooking. But I ate too much...I must now starve myself....just kidding.

There's no real news or anything. Just want to wish everyone a great week. It should be a little crazy here since the semester is winding down and Christmas shopping must get done. Not a fan of shopping, so some of it may get done online...that way my luggage will be smaller when I head back to ATL next month.

Anyway...

P.S. Most of the votes are in and tallied. The results have restored some faith I have in the American public...but not all.

The Democrats were able to regain control of the House (and possibly the Senate), providing Nancy Pelosi with a new title. To tell you the truth, I think she's a little crazy...but I guess all politicians are in some way. She'll probably be better for the country than Dennis Hastert.

I'm really happy that my friend's uncle was elected to represent a district in Pennsylvania. I'm sure he'll make a fine congressman. And maybe now I can see this particular friend who's been slaving over the campaign for the past year.

South Dakotans made their voices heard and overturned the abortion ban the state had enacted (and that had scared the bejeeezus out of me...'cause it's an important right for women to be able to choose...and I have a whorish friend from that state).

Some states restricted the power of the government via eminent domain. This was a hot topic during my work in New Orleans.

Now for the downer: Eight states voted on whether or not to propose an amendment to ban same-sex marriage. Seven states have voted YES to this, while Arizona looks like it voted NO (by a slim margin). Colorado even said No to Domestic Partnership. It really upsets me that people want to take it this far...probably not knowing or understanding that same-sex relationships are just as meaningful as heterosexual ones. ::sigh::

Oh well...it is what it is, but hopefully things will begin to change soon. I'm glad the elections are over with. Maybe some of this mudslinging will halt. It's really getting messy out there. And, of course, they'll have exploited and underpaid workers come to clean it up. Isn't America great?!

Away

I'm finally heading down to visit the gf. This place has become my home away from home...away from home...

The funny thing about this library is that there aren't many books! What is a library without books?! I think computers outnumber books in the place. (But I have yet to venture into the basement and upperest level...see I need books...I think 'upperest' is a word...at least it should be!)

Whatever happened to the card catalogs? It was the most painstaking, excruciating way to find books according to the Dewey Decimal system. (And if you're interested in what those numbers actually mean, check out this page.) Now, everything is computerized. I hardly crack a book! Most of my readings are online. Journals are now published online. I guess it's kind of nice to save trees, but we're sacrificing our sight to do so!

And what about those people who get their Masters in Library Sciences? They no longer have to learn the card catalog system and how to re-shelve books. (I know..they hire minions to do that). Now they have to learn all about computers. That could be a good thing, but I think they're being deprived and becoming lazy. I wouldn't be surprised if some of you reading this right now don't even know what a card catalog is! But the hair grew out, so I decided it was time to go in for a trim. I went back to the same salon because I was satisfied with the new do. Unfortunately, the young woman who cut my hair the last time was busy with another customer. I just decided to go to another woman who was available since I was strapped for time. Mistake.

The lady ended up cutting the back really short and straight across. So now I think I look like a dude...not really...but I don't really like the haircut. Luckily, my hair grows crazy-fast...so it "should" be ok by the time I head back to Tennessee for a homecoming/reunion. ::Crossing my fingers::

Lesson learned: When going to the salon, leave enough time to wait and ask for the little Chinese woman who actually knows how to cut my hair.

Tip of the day: Don't forget to tip your shampooist! They work hard for the money. And you know you like those head massages...so give back!

Hope you all had a wonderful Columbus Day!!!

Session 14

What?! Can this man stay out of trouble with the law?!?! It all started with a romp in a public restroom...now look where it's gone. George Michael was found asleep behind the wheel of his car. And this was the third time! He seriously needs to get that checked out. (Or he could just stop using drugs.)

I remember seeing him on Oprah...not too long ago, I think...saying he's changed, trying to come back, and committed. I guess celebrities will say just about anything to get attention. Of course, he was promoting a new album at the time. It's kind of sad to see people fall back on their words.

I only bring this up because the story was shown on all the news broadcasts this morning. Is the personal life of a 'celebrity' that important?!?! People are dying, starving, and doing good. Isn't that what news is supposed to be about? I guess the world is just too immersed in entertainment 'news'. ::sigh::

Oh yeah! I was helping my gf pack up her stuff this weekend and came across her collection of cassette tapes. (For you youngin's...it's a rectangular piece of plastic that encases a strip of magnetic tape that can hold recordings of sounds. You place it into a 'cassette player' and the music magically sounds. And amazingly, it can play different sounds when place on the 'A' or 'B' side!) She just happened to have a George Michael tape...along with Paula Abdul, Wham, Whitney Houston, and Bobby Brown. I was hoping to find some New Kids on the Block, MC Hammer, Vanilla Ice, and Kris Kross...but no such luck!

Happy Monday to you all! Pump up 'Faith' and have a great one!

Session 13

Session 13 is up and running! Thanks for all the get well wishes! It still seems like I'm trying to cough up my lung, but the medication has helped a little. The official word (about whether or not I'm dying...or need to get tests done) is supposed to arrive on Thursday. Nonetheless, I'm going to New York on Friday!!! Nothing's gonna stop me from going!

I've only been to New York once...for a concert...so I don't know much of what to do while there. I want to check out a lesbian bar but not too sure about which one to go to. Do you have any suggestions? Maybe somewhere that's kinda laid-back, chill, has some dancing (not for me)? I've had the chance (and time) to get out there and see new things and hang with special people. It has kept me away from my computer (which may or may not be a good thing), but it's also kept me away from podcast equipment. So another apology for not having a podcast up this week. Hopefully things will settle down next week when classes start up (aka....end of fun life). But I'm headed out of town in the morrow and must get ready for that. I'll be headed back to my old college town to meet up with friends. So, I'm packing my cowgirl hat and getting ready to boot scoot 'n boogie!

I won't subject you to any honky tonk...but I will leave you with a video of "Crazy" by Gnarls Barkley. I can't seem to get the song out of my head these days. Maybe cause I'm crazy! Have a great one!!!

P.S. I DID get my hair cut...chopped off 11 inches...really short, but I think it suits me. And others say it looks good, although the mom is not a fan. I don't know what to do! All that I have learned and what I believed has been stripped away! You may ask, "em, what's the problem?" Well, I'll tell you. Astronomers have decided that Pluto no longer deserves to be called a "planet"! Rather, they want to categorize it as a "dwarf planet". Why...oh why?!?! (CNN Article)

Now, this just screws up everything. We learned in elementary school that there are nine planets in our solar system. With this new classification of "dwarf planets" will we now have to learn a whole new set of planets? I had a hard time learning the original nine...what am I to do if they add more?! This all has been weighing on my mind all day (not really). And I've been too distraught to podcast (truthfully...I couldn't think of much to say and didn't have enough time to record). Therefore, a new podcast will have to come at a later time (possibly next week). Blame the astronomers!

Oh...and a quote from the article:
"It could be argued that we are creating an umbrella called 'planet' under which the dwarf planets exist," she said, drawing laughter by waving a stuffed Pluto of Walt Disney fame beneath a real umbrella.
Silly astronomers...trix are for kids!

P.S. Anyone use a mnemonic device to remember the order of the planets? Try to use it now without Pluto...does it make sense?! I think NOT!
And why is 'mnemonic' spelled 'mnemonic'?

Looking for a New Do

It's about time for me to get a new hair cut. I've been growing out my hair for over a year, and I finally have the 10 inches needed to donate (and then some). I've always had a plain look...mostly hair just cut even with an occasional layer or two. I haven't had much fun with my straight, black hair. But this time, I'm thinking about going for something different and wild. There's still debate about whether or not I should go for short- or medium-length. A friend of mine says I should go for a fohawk...that way, I don't really have to shave off the sides. However, it probably just screams, "dyke!", and the girlfriend is not a fan. I'm probably not bold enough to sport one anyway!

So, I'm reaching out to the Kelkians. Do you have any suggestions about haircuts? It should be somewhat low-maintenance and in the middle- to short-length range. Pictures would be kindly appreciated!

Session 11

Hey, everyone. I know it's been a while, but I'm currently in Atlanta after spending a little over two weeks in New Orleans. I just wanted to post a quick update on how things have been going, but I'll elaborate on the next podcast (whenever that may be...I promise, I'll try to have one up soon!).

My time in New Orleans has been one of the best experiences of my life! I have never worked so hard, but I enjoyed every moment of it. Here are a couple of pictures.

This was another house we gutted. It started off with a bunch of debris and mold! This picture is of the entry-way of the house. There was plenty of objects to remove, but, luckily, the heavy furniture had already been taken away.

It was nice to clear the place, but it seems that the structure of the house is not in the best condition. Walls were crumbling and floor boards were deteriorating. It's not certain what will become of this particular house, but my guess is that it will have to be demolished.

A few days last week were very hot and humid! We were sweating profusely and getting tired very easily. One day, from afar, we hear a familiar sound. It was the music of an ice cream truck! A team member ran into the street and flagged down the vehicle. We enjoyed some nice, cold popsicles after a long day of working.

Since returning to Atlanta, things have been a little busy. I've been visiting with the family, meeting up with friends, and doing some other things. I've been sore since I've been back here. A few minor injuries, but they're healing. Yesterday, I had to get my wisdom teeth taken out. So now I'm just chillin with my pain meds and taking it easy. I noticed that I have plenty of podcasts to catch up on! I don't know if I'll ever get through them! But I'll try.

Well, I hope that all you Kelkians are doing well. Check back every once in a while. Stay safe and healthy, wherever you are.

Checking In From New Orleans

Hola, Kelkians! I hope that all of you are doing well. As the title of the post indicates, I'm in New Orleans. I've been here for 4 days now, and it's been an interesting experience so far!

I'm currently staying in the Upper 9th Ward of the city. The drive from the airport to the place that I'm staying showed me a glimpse of what I was to witness in person. Buildings are still deserted, some haven't been gutted yet, and the city is just in bad shape. Of course the Bourbon Street/Canal Street area is up and running, but other areas are just so quiet and desolate. I'm currently staying in an old Catholic school building that has been transformed into a communal living space. There are about 150 people staying here. Everyone is responsible for cleaning and helping out with security and kitchen duties. It's not the cleanest of facilities, but I'm just grateful that I have a place to stay free of charge.

It was difficult getting used to the heat since there is no air conditioning in the building. The weather in Louisiana is very hot and humid, so it can get really sweaty (and smelly)! We sleep on cots in an old classroom...there are 13 people sleeping in my room. I was excited since I got hot water in the make-shift showers today! Although it's hot outside, it's nice to have some warm water to scrub the dust and soot away.

My particular group is responsible for gutting houses in the Lower 9th Ward (the hardest hit areas). We work 6 days a week doing so. It's really tough work and even harder with the heat. The houses we enter have not been touched since Hurricane Katrina...nearly a year! So we have to wear protective equipment: suits, respirators, goggles, gloves, boots. We start off by moving out all the furniture, carpet, and everything else. It's left in a pile on the curb and street (since no one really lives in the neighborhoods anymore and not many cars traverse the streets). Then we have to tear down all the walls and ceilings. This is my favorite part since you get to swing away with a crowbar...get rid of some anger and aggression (j/k). The next step is to tediously pull out all the protruding nails from the wood beams. Finally, we have to sweep up and clear out the house, leaving just a skeleton inside. It took us three days to finish one house...and tomorrow we will start a new one.

What was really nice about the whole experience is that we were able to meet the home owner. She was an elderly woman who had lived in the house for 30 years. Her children grew up there and her grandchildren were living there with her when Katrina hit. She told us some stories, shared memories, flipped through a photo album we were able to salvage, and thanked us. It felt really nice to be able to help her out. She was such a sweet woman, and I hope the best for her in the future.

I've gone on long enough, but I'll leave you with a few photos that I took. Though I'm not around the blogs and podcasts for a while, I'm still thinking of you guys. Drop me a comment or e-mail and let me know how you are doing...since I get a few opportunities to check my e-mail. I'll try to update again sometime soon.

This is the street we were working on. Some of the houses were already gutted, some still need to be. The vehicles have been destroyed and just sit there until the city picks them up.

This is the house were gutting. People had come by previously to clear away a pile of trash that was about the same size. But this isn't even half the trash we ended up with. Wood panels, dry wall, and other debris were added to the pile the next day.

This is the kitchen after we removed everything. The worst part was moving the refridgerator. It still contained remnants of food that had been sitting in it for almost a year. It turns into a black sludge that smells horrid!

And this is what it looks like when it's all done!

Session 10

I know it's a little late, but it's still Thursday in a few time zones! I finally came out to a good friend of mine. It had been eating me up that I hadn't told her. We've been friends since high school, and she probably knows more about me than most people in my life. We always talked about our hopes, dreams, insecurities, problems, fears, and everything else. So it was tough holding back on her and not telling her what has been happening in my life. We try to catch up on things every weekend, and lately I found myself not having anything to say because the events of my life have been so gay.

Needless to say, she took it very well. She said that it didn't matter, that it didn't change things between us, and that she supports me. It was great. Even though we don't live near each other any more, I can still count on her. She even said that she had wondered about it through the years. Whenever we would talk, she noticed that I hadn't talked about boy crushes, boyfriends, etc. But she didn't give it too much thought since we were both friends with the little rugby player, who was giving off more of the gay vibe. =)

So we ended up talking for hours about this and that, and it felt comfortable. She isn't one to judge, and I'm grateful that she's such an accepting friend. I don't know why I had been so scared to tell her all these years. Maybe I just didn't want to lose her as a friend...but that wouldn't have happened. Ahhh...the overdrawn fears we have within ourselves.

We did discuss the parentals. She knows my parents and knows just about all the arguments and issues I've had with them over the years. She advised me not to tell them yet, which I hadn't planned on doing anyway. She said to wait until I have finished school, found a decent job, and moved far (FAR) away. Sounds like my plan. Nonetheless, I'm glad that I have taken another step in this course leading me out of the closet. It feels good, and it's a little brighter when you're closer to the door....I recommend it to others!

New Look

Ok...so, I've been working with this new blog template for a while now. Apparently, DC was drowning, so my flight ended up being delayed like 5 hours, and being stuck at the Atlanta airport is just no fun. So, we arrived in DC...oh...like 2:30 this morning. Of course the metro doesn't run at that hour, so everyone was in line for a cab. It was ridiculous! The line curved around the railing, around the kiosk, and back into the building. Luckily, they were piling people into cabs, so I only ended up waiting a little more than half an hour. Getting home near 4am when you were supposed to get in around 10:30 the previous night isn't too bad, right?

This week will be a little hectic trying to get back on task and catching up on work. But I will attempt to podcast...because I kinda missed it last week.

I just want to say thanks to all of you for leaving kind words and keeping my family in your thoughts. I really appreciate it. You all are a great bunch of women. I hope that you all are doing well!
LYLAS, TTFN, TTYL, HAGS (do you remember any more of those crazy things you would write in the yearbooks?)

Not this week

Sorry, everyone. (Leaving on a jet plane...but I know when I'll be back again.) It's going to be so boring since most of the people have moved away or actually have real jobs. But it'll give me time to see the family and rest up. (And I have an El Presidente & the First Lady podcast to keep me entertained!)

The really crappy thing is that my parents still have dial-up! I think I'll die! Maybe I'll head over to the library or a local wifi spot to check up on the blogs and the forum. I'll also try to post another "show" when I get the chance. I'm thinking Thursday since I posted the last one on a Thursday. Just check back! I just need to finish these last two papers and turn them in tomorrow and thursday (both are 15-20 pages). Last night was our presentation...I think it went well. However, everyone went over the allotted times, and we ended up staying an extra 2 hours! At least I don't have class today. I'm getting ready to head out somewhere to get some work done. I'll probably head over to Adams Morgan.

Because of all the work I've had to do, I've been living off of naps and coffee. I haven't had more than 3 consecutive hours of sleep this whole week. And coffee has become a necessity. As soon as it's all over, I'm just going to sleeeeeeepp. Maybe the bags under my eyes will go away.

But I'm proud of myself. I didn't give in to the calls of nicotine this year. Years past have found me puffing on those nasty sticks during finals. I guess it would be very wrong for someone studying public health to be doing so. And, honestly, cigarettes disgust me now! Presentation is on Monday, but we'll be fine. I'm thinking fish nets and a micro-mini...just to add a little sumthin' sumthin' to the show.

I noticed that the blue room cast was up, so I was listening to it while working. They's be some funny chicas! Loving all these podcasts.

Dinner tonight is at my Mental Health prof's house. Not really looking forward to seeing him. But the girl will be there...the one I wrote about in a previous post. I saw her on Friday at the library. Everyone's working their asses off with all these papers. So, my partner and I were there until like 9pm....on a Friday....pathetic. Anyway...she was there. So cute! Too bad she's graduating this semester. ::sigh:: I'll have to ask her if she's planning to stay in DC for work.

Here's something a little different...
Now Playing: "Standing In the Way of Control" ~The Gossip
Awesome, totally rocking song! They wanted me to play some new songs that I learned, so I strummed out and sang KT Tunstall's "Other Side of the World". I went around the room asking if anyone had heard of her. My uber feminist friend says, "I think I've heard of her. Isn't she gay?" My first thought was ::panic:: "she's figured me out!" After I stumbled over some umms, I finally said, "Maybe. I don't know." ::phew:: Then I went back to playing some other song. When my mind started to settle, I remembered Texas A&M's analysis of the song. It brought a smile to my face.

Another smile came about today after my least favorite class. The prof was leaving the room so we could fill out the class evaluations (where we get to rip apart the course and the incompetent prof). Before she left, I wanted to blurt out, "C U Next Tuesday." Alas, class is on Wednesday, and it would have been weird. But it sure brought a smile to my face thinking about it! I believe the prof is a lesbian (again, I have no gay sense), so I was afraid that she may have heard the phrase used by the famous JMeg. Maybe I should have asked her if she knew Bette and Tina.

Now Playing: "Other Side of the World" ~KT Tunstall
(see above for the reason I posted this one)
Album: Eye to the Telescope
Website: http://www.kttunstall.com/
MySpace: http://www.myspace.com/kttunstall

teeheehee...rainbow overalls!

Room full of ladies

I was captivated today. We had final group presentations today in one of the courses, so everyone was dressed nicely and looking good. One woman in particular was looking mighty nice today. I've always thought she was cute. She also has a cute accent since she's from Nepal. But today, she was looking really good. She had this button-down shirt that fit nicely, dark pants, and a nice belt (I love good belts). Man, I have no idea what she was saying, but she sure did look good saying it!

It's not that there's a lack of beautiful women in my program. My class, which entered in the fall, is over 80% female! I know! I finally come out to myself and fall into a sea of gorgeousness. I'm lucky but unlucky. I get to work with some beautiful ladies, but I'm sure most of them are straight. And I don't really know how to tell if someone else is gay (no mullets and flannel floating around...and it's not like I go for that type...but no offense if you do). ::sigh::

A pointless post, but I was just looking for a reason to get away from my paper! Now that I can't think of anything else to write in the blog, I must return to writing about Guinea Worm disease. I leave you with a nice visual. I had 7 people sleeping in my studio, but it was fun! The bachelorette party turned out well, except for the rain. It was filled with sharing memories, eating food, drinking alcohol, playing games, shopping at Georgetown, and partying at Dupont.

We accomplished our mission of getting the bride-to-be piss-ass drunk! She showed off her mad skills by projectile vomiting out the window of the cab! She didn't even leave a drop in the cab, but the damn man made us pay like 35 bucks (although the trip was only a few of miles) for a "car wash". I had even wiped off some of the vomit from the car (yeah, I know I'm a good friend...haha). I should have told her to vomit in the damn car. But, oh well. We all had fun, so it's ok.

The last guest left at 5:00 this morning, so I was up by 4:30. This week is going to be hell! I was writing a paper all day, had class in the evening, had a meeting afterwards, and didn't get home until 10p.m. Presentation is tomorrow on the mental health of Southeast Asia region. We should be fine. Paper and a final on Thursday. (So wishing it was still the weekend)

Instead of getting my work done, I'm listening to podcasts as I write my blog. Yeah, I know. I'll be up all night. Another one of the college roomies is getting married, so we have to celebrate her last days as a free woman!

The place has been cleaned and readied for the friends to come stay. I think I've hidden all signs of gayness...mostly the L Word and Saving Face DVDs. Do I need to hide the Tegan and Sara cds? I doubt the friends know who they are. It's not like their music is gay. I think the computer will be ok....it's mostly links to blogs and stuff. I doubt they'll poke through all that.

So, there will be 6 or 7 people staying in my little studio apartment. Yeah, not a pretty picture. But everyone was too busy to book a hotel! Oh well...it'll be fun. I hope they enjoy what I've prepared and planned. It was all last-minute and stuff since I've been really busy with school and all. But whatever! We can just get drunk and not care. I better be careful while intoxicated. Something almost slipped out of my mouth last weekend. It kind of sucks to not be able to tell them, but I don't think I'm ready. Only one of the friends knows, but she supports my decision to keep it under wraps for now.

So, I'm finishing the last touches to my presentation, and then I'm off to pick them up!

...Go!

The First

Ok...so I'm finally giving in and joining the blog world. I've enjoyed reading/hearing all the blogs, and I've posted some comments, so I thought it was time to get one up myself. There's not much to talk about.

I like how Texas A&M (or Penelope and Rusty) introduce us to new music. Maybe I'll post some of my favorites once in a while. Maybe it'll just be about random shit. Maybe I'll use this blog as a place to type out some of the stuff I learn in my studies. That way, I can waste more time but pretend like I'm studying!
For example...I'm supposed to be writing a paper right now. The topic is on the spread of HIV/AIDS and other STDs among commercial sex workers in South African mining communities and the lack of healthcare services for them. [In truth, I'm doing research on the whole CSW thing just in case all these career ideas don't work out for me ::wink, wink::]

Ok...aaaannnnyyywwwaayyy...

I hope this works!

Now Playing: "The First" ~Tegan and Sara (thought it would be appropriate)
Album: This Business of Art
Website: http://www.teganandsara.com/
MySpace: http://www.myspace.com/teganandsara
